Great product

This alarm is perfect for our little boy that wanders at night time. The alarm goes off and we are able to guide him back to bed a lot quicker. The alarm even on quiet is quite loud and has a doorbell effect that will not stop until you either switch it off and back on again or he settles back down onto the mat. I have no complaints about it at all and am extremely grateful there are products like this available.

Reliable and lifesaving

I'm a full time carer for my father who has severe dementia with challenging behaviour and a high risk of falls due to good mobility with very poor balance and a strong tendency to lean backwards. I use this bed alarm along with Austin Medical chair alarms, Mat-on-guard floor alarms and elinkSmart Wifi cameras to monitor him according to his varying needs to maximise his safety and my respite time. He needs help with toiletting 4-5 times a night. When initially discharged he would have fallen almost immediately on standing so I also used a commode, walker and wheelchair to provide supports when standing by his bed to give me more time to get to him. I place the bed mat under the bedsheet at the level of his shoulders to trigger when he sits up but am aware that if he leaves his hand on the mat it prevents the mat from being triggered. That's why it's nice to have a floor alarm as a back up if like me every second counts. Recently he strained his back trying to pull up his own trousers so he couldn't sit up unaided so the call button attached to the floor mat was also useful. I've been using Austin Medical's alarms for 4 months and they have never failed me. The batteries in the transmitters are still going strong whereas I have had to replace the batteries in Mat-on-guard's transmitters three times as they quickly wear out if you don't disconnect the mat from the transmitter when someone is standing on it. If you plan to care for an elderly relative who falls easily I would urge you to have an Austin Medical alarm in place before they are discharged from hospital. My father fell 3-4 times whilst in hospital and without these alarms he would have fallen countless times at home. An interesting feature is the Austin Medical receiver is able to receive signals from both the Austin Medical and Mat-on-guard transmitters meaning I only have to use one receiver. The Mat-on-guard receiver only works with the Mat-on-guard mat so I don't use it anymore. Having cameras that feed video to a tablet or phone via an app is useful because you can have a quick look to see if you need to rush to help and if for some reason they become temporarily unable to move enough to trigger the mat, the audio on the video can be turned on to alert you to distress or movements. The Austin Medical receiver has three settings for chimes Hi, Med and Low, however the device also makes a clicking noise if activated when the chime is turned off. When I'm asleep I turn the chime onto High, if I'm in the same room as the receiver but might be distracted I'll set it to Low and if I'm in the same room without other noise the clicking alone is enough so I can turn the chime off. A couple of times when attending to my dad at night I have gone back to sleep and forgotten to turn the chime back on. Fortunately the clicking of the device woke me up suggesting my brain was getting tuned in to the noise but I would recommend always having one of the chimes on when sleeping. Recently his functional ability has improved so I've been able to unplug the Mat-on-guard and just use this Austin Medical Bed alarm to tell me whether he's getting up to use his leak-proof urine bottle (I've also reviewed this). I can then watch him on my phone via the elinksmart camera (also reviewed) to ensure he doesn't wander and gets back into bed properly, following which I can turn the chime on the alarm back on. I've done some gardening outside a few times whilst leaving the alarm in the porch or near the back door whilst he has an afternoon nap. Each time he's got up, the alarm let me know without fail. Testing how far the transmitter can send a signal to the receiver might be a way of testing how close the transmitter is to needing to be replaced which I believe will be after about a year's use but might be sooner if the pad is being activated frequently. If I think a pad won't be used for a long time it is straightforward to open up the pouch and switch it off to save battery life but you have to be sure you or someone else won't forget to turn it back on if you consider doing this. I like having a spare mat as when a transmitter does eventually go flat I can just move the transmitter from one mat to another whilst I wait for a new transmitter to be delivered (not had to do yet).

The chime ....

The mat works wonderfully well. The problem is that the chime is that of a doorbell. And she can hear it. That is a disaster for someone with dementia. Before we can reach Mum she is on her way downstairs to open the door. Is it not possible to change the sound of the alarm/chime? Otherwise completely happy - but the sound of the alarm is defeating the purpose ... it's making the situation even more dangerous.

Helpful

Works fine, however, husband goes to bathroom alarm rings (we are in separate rooms) I was hoping for a pad that you could switch alarm off wait a few minutes, then switch on again to see if he had made it back to bed ok. Unfortunately once you switch alarm off it resets, to silent, so you can't tell if he is back in his room. Apart from that it works well the chime volume can be set easily. Bit expensive, but does a good job.

Peace of mind

I bought the alarm and adapter as my 92 year old Mum had fallen twice in her bedroom. The alarm and adapter were easy to set up and alerted me to the fact she had stood up the volume on low is loud enough to wake me. I have placed the alarm on the landing and it connects with the sensor mat in the down stairs bedroom with no problem.

Waste if money

Every time my Mum moved it went off. It was only used for one night so a waste of money

Offers great peace of mind

Excellent product, works so well and gives great peace of mind knowing your loved one is sleeping safely. Well worth every penny of price knowing we can sleep soundly knowing alarm will sound if we need to check in on elderly person in their room.

Gives freedom and peace of mind.

Works well. Ensures my elderly father is safe in bed while mum can potter elsewhere in home with alarm with her.The draw back is of course another exposure of WiFi.
