Fabulous bit of kit. Very expensive but it allows us to control our heating room by room

cautionary tale
Bit of a tale i didnt buy this buy i feel i should let people know this situation i encountered with tado. Basically i already have smart heating control with salus but it just broke for the second time. Anyway i asked about replacing it they asked me to show the wiring of the hard wired unit at the boiler and i did they told me i couldnt replace it with tado. tThey were very secretive about things in the end i worked out they meant the wiring was not correct for tado. Also they do not release installation instructions with the unit when you buy it but they did with my salus unit i dont know about others. I do realise that we should not open the boiler ourselves which is perfectly fine, but they said what you need to do is book someone to install it then have them call tado when they are in your home for installation instructions from one of their engineers. To me that is very dubious not to mention an installer may feel insulted having to consult a company for instructions on how to install their product! So make of it what you will but this experience has steered me away from tado which is a shame as i was hoping to get this one!

Impressed so far...but had a small issue with multi-zone, resolved quickly by tado
Cautiously impressed with this system. I have a complicated multi zone system with solar water heating and two high voltage thermostats and was unsure if this would be compatible (nest for instance is not compatible with high voltage thermostats). Tado helpfully advised me that it was so I the installed two smart thermostats, extension kit and internet bridge. I have not opted for radiator stats yet as I read some reviews about them being inaccurate being so close to the hot radiator. It was quite easy to install myself but required some electrical competence as the instructions were overly simplistic on the website (and missed cable colours for instance). The internet bridge needs both a LAN port and a USB port for power. This was fine for my set up but if you don’t have a spare USB port on your router it could get a bit awkward. My biggest complaint was that having installed everything correctly, the upstairs thermostat was not able to independently call for heat. I emailed Tado and they changed something in the configuration on their side to allow the upstairs stat to call for heat independently (the default seems to be that only the first thermostat can do this). So my request for improvement would be to allow the user to configure this in the app themselves without requiring you to contact support. Multi-zone systems are pretty common these days so anyone with the same situation I recommend that you check your second zone can call for heat from the boiler independently after installation.Other than that, the app is great, allows for custom heating/hot water schedules and provides helpful notifications etc. I haven’t signed up for open window subscription or geolocation as I find the free notifications to say “it looks like you’ve arrived home, shall I turn on the heating?” appropriate. So far, pretty pleased with it.

Great, but a few niggles
the system works extremely well - highly recommended. However, there are a few small niggles. The room thermostat only uses alkaline batteries and will not work with rechargeable batteries. Strange for a company that apparently prides itself in pursuing environmental benefits. Also, replacing the batteries (x3) is fiddly. There is a little screw on the bottom, which is guaranteed to drop through your fingers when you unscrew it. Not a small Philips or Torx head, just an ordinary flat screwdriver head which makes it harder to fasten.

We moved home and the feature of our old home we most missed was Tado.
In our previous home, we lived in harmony with our Tado and really missed it when we moved. We purchased it all again for our new home, though the latest versions. All went well with installing Tado Thermostat/Extension and Radiator Thermostats except for Tado support wrongly identifying our boiler as a "system boiler" resulting in no instructions forthcoming for installing the extension - and then the wrong instructions. Other than that all works fine, every home should operate like this! The need to purchase an "auto assist" package for features we were accustomed to receiving free does jar a bit and leads me to an expectation of an even better service. Now all running fine, though

Tad, it works, they know and they care you know.
With the excellent help of Tado support it IS an easy install so the 4 star is due to the fact that the extension kit had a hardware version of 35 and it had to ratchet to 54. So sent my Vaillant Boiler maintainer away until the next day as it looked like a long job - he had other jobs to go to.My advice if you have a query - use the chat facility it is phenomenal, I did, and the good thing is they do not respond in pigeon English.... or there is the last resort, give them a call. Now that I fully understand the system I will be rushing to buy the Smart Thermostats, far superior to our mechanical units. Ooh, nearly forgot unlike the other two popular systems Tado easily replaces a wireless system.

Buy the older V3 kit and get the functionality of 'Auto Assist' for free
The older V3 models come with a free App that gives you geofencing and open window reporting, these V3+ model don't seem to have any different hardware just a desperate ploy to extract more money from their customers by sticking a '+' on the end of the model. The V3+ App is also free but if you want to use 'Auto Assist' which is Geofencing and open window monitoring then you're now going to have to pay £2.99 a month for the privilege.Do yourself a favour (and some money) and buy the V3 version.
