Violent content for young readers
I am a fifth grade teacher and was troubled to find a section in "New Kid" that describes, quiet graphically, the murder of a character's mother, and his suspicion that his father may be guilty of the crime. As my students (10 and 11 year olds) have thoroughly enjoyed the other baseball-themed books by Tim Green, I'll admit that I didn't read the book myself before putting it on the bookshelf. I trusted the age recommendation of the publisher and what I knew of the author's other books. Right now our classroom copy has been removed for our bookshelf after a fifth grader, very responsibly, came to me to say he was troubled by some of the content in his book. I have written to the publisher to request a change in the age-recommendations for this particular book, which seems much more suited for teenaged readers, in the content at least. Just a word of warning for other educators and parents who may be relying on the familiarity of this author when purchasing this text.

Not appropriate for 9 year olds
I trusted the publisher on the age and let my son read it based on that. I happened to.glance over his shoulder and read about a kid, I guess the bully, and he thought it was a good idea to sneak a beer and try a cigarette. Needless to say, I pulled the book away and write this review. Not sure I'll buy anymore books by this author for a long while.

New Kid
This book is a five star rating for me.Characters:The characters were good and developed throughout the story. Each of them had a role and there were no characters that were just "there."Plot:The book started and ended with a bit of confusion which was cleared within a paragraph. The plot is about a good baseball player who is always the new kid for unknown reasons from his dad. You find out what those are. Though some things are not clear at times, you will not feel like you are missing out on any info.QualityThe grammar punctuation and story line all made sense and was good with the book.Recommend forI would recommend this book for boys, mostly as it's about baseball but girls can read it to, ages 12-15 as some of the content ( guns drinking death beating other kids up etc) is probably not suited or prefered for kids under that age.Hope this helped and happy reading!
