Not as good as it used to be
I have travelled to a lot of Greek islands and bought this in order to read about islands I have not yet been to. The main problem I had with this book is that when I checked what it said about the islands I already knew (a good check for its reliability) I found I disagreed with much of what was said and found that much was omitted that would have been useful for new visitors.A lot that was said was trite and unimaginative and some comments about restaurants seemed to display a personal bias against them. There is a lot of information in total and some of it good. I just expected more from a series that I have used often in the past ; the research just seemed a little lazy maybe.

“The Isles of Greece, the Isles of Greece, Where burning Sappho laughed and sang.”
This 592-page book is an interesting and readable (the two are not always found together) guide to the Greek Islands. (Byron: “The Isles of Greece, the Isles of Greece, Where burning Sappho laughed and sang.”) Unlike many guides, this is not a glossy booklet dotted with colourful photographs to make it look superficially attractive, but a (literally) rough guide in terms of comparative paper finishes, but well-designed and presented, with readable text, useful maps, and (well-chosen) photographs only where space allowed. The excellent design and layout means that you don’t need unnecessary spot illustrations to break up column after column of small-printed data. The Contents areP004: IntroductionP024: Basics (travel, accommodation, touristy stuff)P054: The Guide (Athens and the mainland ports; The Argo-Saronic islands; The Cyclades; Crete; The Dodecanese; The east & north Aegean; The Sporades and Evvia; The Ionian islands)P520: Contexts (history, articles, etc.)P576: Index

Great reference for Greek Island trip planning and touring...just note it is BIG!
This is a great guide. It is very useful. Sights, eating, drinking, hotels, transportation, ferries, getting around, maps, tours --- reasonable coverage of everything you need. Everything we used/tried was current and complimented our own research done ahead of time online or watching Anthony Bourdain. We used the guide daily in our 9-day, 3-island-plus-Athens trip. But the book is big...593 pages big. It's actually heavy when you are talking about packing light, maybe even taking a backpack to hop a few islands. So I actually cut out the sections with the ~100 pages that were going to be relevant and secured them with a small binder clip. Left the other 500 pages at home. The clipped pages held together really well, jammed in and out of luggage, and flipped through all the time. With the binder clip you can then take the section or map you know you need that day and put in in front and not worry about finding a page while standing on the street.I don't blame the book for the sheer volume and it really served its purpose once I hacked it up. All the pages returned home so I can use again, loan out to traveling friends, or just reinsert the pages, loosely, and stick up on the bookshelf. There might be better, more concise references for a particular island or chain. But not knowing our exact itinerary, this robust book also helped us decide stops for our trip.Maybe someone smarter than me can figure out a cleaner way to consolidate just the info you need to take with you on the trip.

Too much information?
I'm sure all the information is is this book, but it is very small print and not easy to sort through. I don't recommend it as a starting point for planning a trip or learning about the Greek islands. It's kind of like if a foreigner wanted to learn about English and all you gave them was a dictionary - might be best to start with some words and phrases.

The book was ok, but really wasn't what I ...
The book was ok, but really wasn't what I was looking for. Did not help much when walking around on the different islands. Wasn't sure what I was really looking for when I purchased it so its my own fault for not doing more research on Greek Island travel books.
