Q: Is there a secret to removing the square ice cubes from the mold? I read so many reviews about how difficult they are.

The silicone rubber is very flexible, even at freezer temps. I remove the cubes one at a time. I usually start with a corner cube. I use my finger to pull the two exterior walls of the mold away from the ice cube. Then, I push up from the bottom and the cube pops free. I have not found it difficult.

I have the 6 tray and the 2 of the big round ones. They work. I really like them and the ice does come out "pretty" easily...needs a little nudge. Great for Margaritas!

Q: How much water to put in each mold to work properly? Why were no directions, literature, etc provided? What's the greasy film inside each mold?

We put the balls together completely, and then fill the balls up until Water is just to the top of the hole in the top the ball. We washed the molds very well prior to using them.
